Users can now create and decorate virtual cupcakes in their everyday surroundings and experiment with swoops of frosting or a blanket of ganache, some sugar, sprinkles, confetti and even more. The new AR features allow users to share their creation on social and messaging apps and provides recipe inspirations based on what they’ve designed.
From the In the Kitchen app, touch the new button in the lower right-hand corner that says “Fun!” After a short introduction, users will be directed to find a flat surface with their iPhone or iPad camera to do their decorating. They can then choose a cupcake, resize it to their own preferences, and pick from a variety of frosting colors and toppings. Traditional toppings such as a candle and gummy bears give way to creative topping options like mini doughnuts, cheeseburgers, googly eyes, and even a unicorn. Once they have finished, users can save and share their image and receive a customized list of cupcake recipes inspired by their creation — no matter how unique.
“We’ve seen how augmented reality allows users to reinvent and reimagine what they are seeing around them,” said Liesel Kipp, SVP of Product and Design at Scripps Lifestyle Studios. “Food is a key part of everyone’s daily life, and augmented reality provides people with the opportunity to reinvent their surroundings, try new things before making them, and reimagine how they create, share and enjoy food.”
