Travel Channel will make its new series “Big Crazy Family Adventure” available to viewers via a number of media outlets one week before the series debuts on June 21, marking the first time a TV network owned by Scripps Networks Interactive will launch the full season of a series prior to its on-air launch — a move that comes at a time when more TV networks are considering similar deployment.
 
All nine hourlong episodes of the series will be available through the Watch Travel Channel app and VOD platforms including Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand, Charter, Cox, Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS. The series will also be available for download on platforms including but not limited to iTunes, Google Play, Vudu and Microsoft’s Xbox Video.
 
 
“Big Crazy Family Adventure” follows the Kirkby family during an epic 96-day trip. Each episode follows the family as they make their way through expansive landscapes, challenging climates and unique communities in some of the most remote areas of the Northern Hemisphere.
 
The launch comes as NBC has garnered some attention for releasing the entire season of its 1960s mystery drama “Aquarius” across various platforms and as other media companies ponder the best way to make content available to a populace that is gravitating more toward consuming batches of episodes, if not an entire series, at once. With viewers increasingly time-shifting so they can watch a series at times of their own choosing,
 
TV networks must grapple with making episodes available in new distribution patterns while at the same time attempting to safeguard a linear broadcast, which generates the bulk of advertising revenue.
 
Earlier Monday, Time Warner’s Turner announced its plans to make available 15 different series from TBS and TNT via on-demand from Comcast”s Xfinity. Turner will allow viewers to watch every episode from the debut to the most current week available on TV under terms of the deal.
